Gallup Folk Music FestivalA celebration of the roots of traditional americana in New Mexico

Thursday May 18 - 7 pm Raising Cane Concert, Coal Street Pub, The Coffee House. Gallup. The Raising Cane show went off very, very well, in spite of the fact that their one singer-songwriter and rhythm guitar player, Aimee Hoyt, was absent. Apparently, Aimee had was on the wrong end of a pedestrian/utility pole collision and had concussed herself. But even without the writer of "Oh, Carolina," "Ride the Rain," and "Kansas Nights," the Raising Cane boys put on an impressive performance for the large crowd at the Coal Street Pub. Don Grieser was in good form both vocally and instrumentally. Don sang our local fave, "Adobe in the Pines," of course, but also sang a great rank Wakefield number and some other songs with which I wasn't familiar from other Cane appearances. Rick Martinez on the stand-up bass provided an especially fine version of "Dark Hollow," as well as providing harmony vocals and lead vocals on a number of other ditties. Greg Daigle was masterful on the lead acoustic guitar, and favored us with lots of hot breaks, along with excellent vocals and my personal favorite Raising Cane vocal number, "Wild Life Out West." Them fellers played real good too, with highlights, "Jerusalem Ridge," and one of Greg's instrumentals from the new release, "Green and Cold." The still fullsome crowd dissipated only after extracting an encore from the band, the final track on the "Ride the Rain" CD, Don Grieser's "Canyon Waltz."

From a mercantile standpoint, the show also appeared to be a success. Raising Cane generated some significant tips from a tip pitcher which was circulated around the crowd after the first set, with additional contributions close to the end of the second set. Ramon told me that the Coal Street Pub did better than average business for a Thursday night, so it was a good thing for the house. While the CD sales were not quite what I would have hoped, given the excellent songs on this newest Raising Cane release, there were a number of folks who were inspired to buy their CDs now, while they are still readily available. Raising Cane will have CDs available for sale at this Saturday's performance at "Road to Rich's" out in the Timberlake Ranches near Ramah, NM.If Rusty Strings at the Coffeehouse and the Good Ol' Back Porch Band at the Coal Street Pub can keep things rolling, this here Gallup Folk Festival might be on its way to being an unmitigated success! Who knew?
